The Salt Lake County surveyor's office is going airborne. After two years of wading through Federal Aviation Administration procedures, the surveyor's office received an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) permit last month to operate drones "to gather aerial photographs and elevation data." "As far as we can tell from the FAA website," said Surveyor Reid Demman, "we're the only Utah agency with an active " and one of only a handful of county agencies nationwide. Rice County to consider free and open GIS data policy There was little doubt Tuesday that the county provides valuable information regarding its geographical information system. B{/span}ut whether to charge for it is a decision yet to be made. One of the things that we, as County Surveyors, must constantly be aware of is safety especially on the road. I'm thinking that NACS.org would be a good place to acquire safety manuals that are specific to surveying and consolidate them for all to use. If you have a safety manual that you would be willing to share, please post a link to it. Questions or comments are welcome. Chuck Pearson Here it is as an attachment. hope it's there

Tom, Utah has the given the individual Counties the ability to set up monument preservation funds through the plat recording act. My County Boundary runs along Section lines and State Boundary lines so preserving the monuments would follow PLSS guidelines. We also have a corner record sheet requirement if a surveyor is using a PLSS corner and there is not a corner record sheet on file in the County Surveyor office he is required to fill out a corner record sheet for the corners he is using. PLSS corners in transportation corridors are usually missing, how ever if they are still in our DOT is required to file a corner record sheet if they are using them or planning to remove them. Tom: In Oregon, the remonumentation of PLSS corners is funded by the Public Land Corner Preservation Fund which is a fee (not to exceed $10) assessed at the time of recording a document conveying an interest in real property (deed, easement, mortgage, etc). Insofar as a county boundary would be coincident with a PLSS corner, it would be eligible for remonumentation. As far as transportation corridors, we do not set corners in the middle of an Interstate Highway or other major, high volume road. In those cases, reference monuments are set in a place as safe as possible. Hope this helps. Chuck Pearson

Hi All, Is anyone actively working on preserving the monuments that comprise your county's boundary or corners that may lie within populated areas or transportation corridors? Specifically I am interested in if these efforts are for the preservation of the PLSS corners.

I am attending this in October. Looking foward to it! This seminar will train the individual in the use of OPUS-Projects. For several years the National Geodetic Survey has provided users a method of computing survey grade single point GPS positions through the use of the Online Positioning User Service or OPUS. OPUS-Projects is an extension of that online service to provide the user with the knowledge and capability to complete an entire GPS campaign or project on line from downloading the data to least squares adjustment. Access to OPUS-Projects is restricted to individuals who have successfully completed this training. Check with your State Geodetic Advisor for one in your state.
