    COUNTY SURVEYOR (Senior Civil Engineer) Department of Public Works Marin County, San Rafael, CA $9,162 - $11,085 / Month The Marin County Human Resources Department and the Marin County Department of Public Works are announcing a recruitment for the position of County Surveyor. One full-time vacancy currently exists in the Engineering Division. The eligible lists established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancy and any future vacancies for open, fixed-term, full-time or part-time positions which may occur in these positions while the lists remain active. Eligible lists remain active for a minimum of six (6) months. The County of Marin is recruiting for a County Surveyor to plan, organize, direct and manage the operations of the survey unit in the Public Works Department. The survey unit provides highly technical services to County departments, private developers and County residents. The incumbent will perform difficult and complex professional land surveying work involving responsible charge duties in the field or office; assign, monitor and review the work of survey parties; provide assistance and/or direction to professional and technical staff; exercise responsible charge over examination of Records of Survey, Corner Records, Parcel Maps and Final Maps, including making determinations on such maps; serve as expert witness on County legal matters; and contract with outside agencies to act as City Surveyor. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership qualities, foster teamwork and a positive work environment, demonstrate effective communication to customers and across organizational levels, as well as possess extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of boundary establishment, the Professional Land Surveyor’ Act, the Subdivision Map Act, and other applicable laws and County Ordinances. They will be capable of performing field and office survey work required in the preparation of Record of Survey maps, subdivision maps, corner records, deed descriptions and plot plans for County projects, including supervising the maintenance of official records, maps and survey reports. This candidate will also have the ability to establish guidelines to maintain professional, technical and legal standards mandated by State law, prepare the annual equipment budget and make recommendations for the purchase of necessary surveying equipment, and represent the department at public hearings and before the Board of Supervisors and various commissions and may be asked to represent the County as an expert witness on surveying related matters. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Registration as a Civil Engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers prior to January 1, 1982, or Land Surveyor as issued by the California State Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists and four years of increasingly responsible professional engineering or land surveying experience of which two years were served in a land surveying supervisory or administrative capacity.     COUNTY SURVEYOR County of San Mateo Department of Public Works $54.29 - $67.86 /Hour The County of San Mateo is currently seeking a County Surveyor to oversee the operation and function of the survey unit in the Public Works Department. The incumbent will perform difficult and complex professional land surveying work involving responsible charge duties in the field or office; assign, monitor and review the work of survey parties; provide assistance and/or direction to professional and technical staff; and perform other related work as required. The ideal candidate will possess: • Strong leadership qualities to foster teamwork and a positive work environment • Excellent communication and public presentation skills • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with direct reports, co-workers, managers, vendors, stakeholders and customers • Hands-on experience using computer aided drafting software, such as AutoCAD, SoftDesk, LDD and Civil 3D to draft survey mapping documents • Ability to analyze available data and make decisions of a professional nature as defined by the State Land Surveyors Act relating to surveying projects • Ability to direct the activities of a field survey party and office engineering technical staff • Skills to review and certify subdivision map applications, plan and survey records submitted by private and government surveyors for compliance with the State Land Surveyors Act, the State Subdivision Map Act and County Ordinances • Ability to perform field and office survey work required in the preparation of Record of Survey maps, subdivision maps, corner records, deed descriptions and plot plans for County projects • Ability to establish guidelines to maintain professional, technical and legal standards mandated by State law • Ability to establish and enforce safety rules for the safety of crews and the safety of the public • Ability to coordinate with County Public Works inspectors, private surveyors and other engineers and job contractors on survey projects • Ability to prepare the annual equipment budget and make recommendations for the purchase of necessary surveying equipment • Ability to supervise the maintenance of official records, maps and survey reports and the preparation of related report • Ability to write and check boundary legal descriptions and perform other professional duties which require a licensed land surveyor • Ability to make regular contacts with the general public, other departments, contractors, private surveyors and outside organizations relative to municipal mapping and survey practices and procedures • Skills to represent the department at public hearings and before the Board of Supervisors and various commissions • Ability to prepare reports as required • Ability to be progressive in updating/refining business processes as they relate to Surveying and Mapping as well as document retrieval and preservation • Strong organizational, prioritization and multi-tasking skills Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Land Surveying or Civil Engineering, or successful completion of the Land Surveyor-in-Training (L.S.I.T.) or Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) certificates; 5 years of progressively responsible professional land surveying experience, including 2 years of experience supervising one or more survey crews; possession of a valid license as a Land Surveyor from the State of California; and a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
